It's hardware and/or software to permit a controller device to control electric devices. Simply put, a Home Automation system can:
| Dim a bathroom light when you enter at night | |
| Turn on the outside lights when someone approaches | |
| Play a message over your stereo when someone drives up your driveway | |
| Turn all the Christmas lights at the same time, and automatically turn them off too | |
| Flash and animate Halloween lights when little spookers come to the door | |
| Create a "lived-in" look with lights going off and on in a natural, drawn from life pattern | |
| Call your house from the cell phone and turn on the hot tub before you get home | |
| Automate the feeding of your pets | |
| Display the caller-id on your TV set | |
| Control your lights and appliances with voice commands | |
| Link light switches with different outlets or lights and change them anytime | |
| Get an email at the office when your security system is tripped | |
| Have the system at your vacation home call a neighbor if the temperature drops to a danger (freezing) level |
As you can see, home automation is many things to many people. Not only are the inventive and clever folks embracing these technologies, but now simple kits put it within reach of everyone.
